My apologies for the light posting this week. Hollie is away in Mexico, and my computer decided it was the perfect time to get a virus and basically die. I can't upload any pictures, which is really salting my game.
Lucky for me, Jenna Rose just unveiled an amazingly beautiful new print for tea towels and totes, and I think it's worth re-posting. I've already sent her about a million emails that say "I need one of those totes RIGHT NOW". Can you believe how talented she is?
Speaking of talented ladies, a bunch of the Beehive girls got together last week to try their hand at making soap. They had an amazing teacher in the lovely Imke, our new friend who was visiting from Germany. You can read all about it over on the Beehive blog, here.

Required Reading Vol. 5
Jane left for New York City last night, and I'm leaving for Mexico tomorrow. A well deserved break on both our parts. It's been about two years since I went on a proper getaway vacation, and I am feeling it. Mike and I are going to see our friend Dave get married, and we're pretty excited about it. So, we apologize for the lack of updates around here, but hopefully these awesome (and local!) blogs will keep you entertained and enthralled.
Domestic Scientist is the blog of one of our dear friends, Thea. A member of the Beehive Craft Collective and an absolute classic lady, her blog is full of delicious baking and preserving recipes, delightful histories about the women in her family, details about her embroidery work, and gardening know-how. Thea is straight out of another time, and I want to soak up all of her knowledge of how to do things the old-fashioned way. You should want to as well.
Tara is behind Lulou & Ada, one of my favourite reads of late. A visual treat, her blog is a pin-board of her exceptional interests. We carry some of Tara's embroidered badges in the shop, and I've slowly been developing a major girl crush on her. Sometimes I feel creepy about how in line our interests fall - from looms and weaving to beekeeping to Iceland and Queen Elizabeth II. She frequently posts interesting links and stories, and it's well worth to read back through her archives.

Georgie Russell is another artist that we carry at the shop, screenprinting under the name Hand & Shadow. I personally own a couple of her t-shirts (hello, amazing wolf and tooth prints!) and the Nebula Scarf, which is currently my favourite wardrobe piece . Her blog, Braided Stream, is a collection of nature and art and craft and science. Georgie posts are usually based on her research or inspiration from the natural world, and since I am such a huge fan of her work, I quite enjoy finding out as much about her process as possible.
I can't even remember how I stumbled upon This Must Be The Place, but I'm so glad that I did. This is a newer blog, based out of Hamilton, and the photography and writing is just lovely. It's nice to see more lifestyle blogging popping up in Hamilton, and it's comforting to see all the likeminded and cool people moving in. It doesn't hurt that the blog is also named after my favourite Talking Heads songs. Good choice.
Happy weekend everyone!!! Our lovely interns will be manning the shop this weekend. Come say hi! I'll be on the beach if you need me.

So Many Weeds
We took advantage of the warm weather on the weekend and started to tackle Doug's garden. The previous owners of the house let everything grow over with weeds, and after living there a year with zero garden upkeep, it was about time. There was a lot to contend with.
Weed city.
Pepper was really the star of the show, chillin' on the grass attached to a little kitty leash I purchased years ago from Dollarama. She was pretty content to lounge around, occasionally sniffing the plants we purchased, and gnawing on the roots we pulled out of the earth, thinking it was a new stick.
There's so much to be done still, but by the end of Monday we had managed to dig up about 12 feet of garden, and even started planning a couple things. I'm so excited about this summer project.

Just Wow
I'm not even really sure where to begin. This past weekend was one that I will look back on with very fond memories. A superb bunch of entrepreneurial ladies putting together the best shopping event this city has ever seen. And making internet connections turn into real life friendships. Just the best thing ever.
Because Hamilton showed them so much love, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the first of many events to come.

The caliber of the pop up shop was staggering. White Elephant was so thrilled to be included among such talented and inspirational people as Victoire, Preloved, Fieldguided, Yarn Over Movement and Robber. I couldn't help but go home with a couple of beautiful things myself, including this rad Mauve Naif sweatshirt from Victoire, the clean and classic Wren Coat from Preloved, and the blush dip-dyed Thunder In Our Hearts tote from Fieldguided. I spoiled myself. But it was impossible not to. I could have came home with so much more if my wallet allowed me to. Hamilton needs more independent retailers carrying independent designers all the time. For real.
We can finally let you in on all of our projects that we tried to keep a secret in preparation for this weekend. Firstly, we hung our new sign, which was kind of monumental.
Our welder friend Chris constructed a new bracket for us to hang our new sign from. Don't even think about stealing it because it's made ridiculously stronger and hung higher than our last one. I'd like to make some sort of menacing threat about Chris hunting you down if you mess with it, but look at those tattoos. He's a total softie. But seriously, please don't steal our sign again. I will cry inconsolably for WEEKS.
Lindsay worked hard on our ribbon banner that she cut from satin and we strung it outside along with bulb lights from Jane's window out to a tree. We were going to take it down immediately after the weekend, for fear of it getting grungy over time, but maybe we'll leave it up for a little while longer. I think it's so cute.
And we repainted our pew pew pew! This was the combined effort of Krysten and myself, and took about 3 weeks of work. So worth it. I can't wait to sit on this all summer long.
Oh, right, did I mention that we had KITTENS IN OUR WINDOW?
We worked with the Animal Welfare Association of Hamilton on this project. They lent us four 14 week old kittens (which we later decided were more like "teenage cats" BUT STILL ADORABLE) for the night, and their lovely representatives Helen and Dale were on hand to answer any questions about their organization or adopting these specific kittens. Both of my cats, Tanooki and Meatbulb, were adopted from their association, as well as my mother-in-law's cat and my sisters. They are a great group and their passion for animal rescue is evident in everything that they do.
Jane and I have joked about having kittens in the window on many occasions, and the Field Trip seemed like the perfect opportunity to actually make it happen. Cute dresses, cute girls, cute kittens. We wanted to overload the Art Crawl crowd with cuteness. Jane and Doug constructed the kitten enclosure, building up the floor and constructing a 9 foot wall with a door. We stapled an old pretty floral sheet to the ground, made a kitten jungle gym out of some apple crates and old baseboards, hung ribbon from the ceiling for them to play with, threw in tiny balls of yarn, and gave them a Loyal Luxe Log Cabin to explore, which we also now carry at the shop along with the Teepee. The kittens went nuts for the whole thing.
They were hyper and playful all night long. I think they loved the attention of being in the window and people cooing over them all night. The lone girl kitten, Tessa, actually figured out how to jump over the wall. Doug should have listened to Jane when she told him she didn't think it was high enough.
It wasn't so bad. It meant we got to hold her by the cash register for the rest of the night instead. Somebody please adopt this sweet and fiesty little girl. She's perfect.
On top of Art Crawl and the Pop up Shop, it was great hanging with these ladies all weekend long. Katie and Regine from Victoire are so cool. I can't say enough nice things about them and their shop and their vision for independent Canadian retail. At one point during the weekend, our new friend Emma, visiting from Germany, asked Katie and I "shouldn't you guys be competition for each other?" To which Katie replied, "no, because every dollar that is spent at either of our shops is a dollar kept out of the mall. We want each other to succeed." Bang on.

On top of putting together this whole event, Katie and Regine also found us this incredible Hamilton plate during one of their antique shopping trips. Thanks for believing enough in this city to want to do something amazing here. Thanks to everyone who helped us out, or who was a part of the pop up shop, or who came out and supported local and independent business, and art, and community and fun. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.
We'll be drawing the grand prize winners of our online giveaway and raffle this week. But first, we need to nap.

I'm A Blogger
AHHHHHHH. We are on such a frantic high right now, preparing for Art Crawl and tonight's Pop Up Shop. We hope to see you there. Remember that the first 25 through the door get a gift bag courtesy of White Elephant!
We've been getting new stock in like crazy to prepare for tonight.
Ever the crowd-pleaser, Tree & Kimball sent us a whole new lot of vintage inspired dyed lace necklaces. Definitely one of our favourites around here, as you may have guessed from how much we mention her work.
New hand-stitched barrettes from Montreal based Pin Pals. Super cute designs, super cute packaging, super cute pair of girls behind the whole thing. What else could you ask for?
I have been drooling over Leah Duncan's exquisite print designs for ages. I am so pleased to say that we are now carrying her work. I'm pretty sure her tea towels, prints and pillow cases will sell out in a flash.
We first spotted these earrings dangling on the ears of our dear friend Kate. Made by Corteza, also based in Montreal, they use organic materials such as petals, leaves, bark, wood, seeds and roots and cast them in resin. Personally I can't decide between the baby's breath pair or the ferns. Perfect for summer.
I am all about card cases these days. Trying to minimize the amount of things I need to carry around with me at all times, which includes a big bulky purse. This "skillionaire" card case from In God We Trust fits my requirements of being compact, minimalistic, and totally wicked.
I'm not going to tell you that you should come out tonight. Because you should already know that. And you're already planning on coming. I know this. You wouldn't want to miss this for the world. I'll be counting down the minutes until I see your face.
